Bajaj has launched the Chetak, an electric scooter (E2W). This is the first Electric two-wheeler launch by a listed two-wheeler OEM. With a 4kW electric motor, Chetak will go on sale from January 2020 in Pune and Bangalore, with the price expected to be around Rs120k-plus.
The scooter is expected to have a range of 85-95km on a single charge. As per mgmt, the company has no presence in scooters, so it can disrupt the segment by being the first listed OEM to launch an E2W.
Electrification is likely to happen first in the scooter segment and Bajaj can potentially take lead there.
TVS Motors could be the next OEM to launch an Electric 2wheeler – but unlike Bajaj, TVS has a strong internal combustion engine scooter franchise, so it may be much less keen to ramp up on electric 2 wheelers.
